September 20th was a whirlwind day of activity at Rockhaven. It was the annual United Way Day of Caring. Across the nation, teams of volunteers fan out to fix up, dress up, and shore up hundreds of non-profits as a community service. This year, a team of 16 workers from United Health Care, came with a smile to paint fences, railings, curbs; to wash windows and garages; vacuum basements, and remove air conditioners. We couldn't believe what an attitude of helping that they expressed! They did about two weeks of work in just 5 hours! Thanks to the whole gang that did so much for Rockhaven. We're very grateful! Here are a few photos.

Administrator, Barbara Entress, manning the Rockhaven booth at the September 16th Summit at Fifth Church, New York City. High Ridge House, a Christian Science nursing facility in Riverdale, NY hosted the meeting. Seven Christian Science organizations dedicated to serving Christian Scientists in the tri-state area (CT, NY, NJ) spoke to an audience of fellow Christian Scientists, sharing information about their services. That included residential housing, nursing care, institutional work, and visiting nurse services.

The weather prediction for thunderstorms didn't come about, as we had a perfect summer day for the picnic. It was hot, but breezy in the shade, so fairly comfortable outside. The menu was well rounded, with delicious salads, local sweet corn, deviled eggs, pesto/anchovy tomatoes, bean salad, mac & cheese, and lots more to go with the grilled chix, hot dogs, sweet Italian sausage, and burgers. And after all that, we still had a dessert table full of delectible home made and specialty store sweets. Nobody went home hungry!

Not only do we have lots and lots of flowers at Rockhaven, but we also have edible plants. This week the rhubarb was ripe, so the administrator made strawberry-rhubarb crisp, with local strawberries, of course. Glastonbury is known for it's berries & fresh fruit orchards. Here the residents enjoy the dessert!

Well, winter came early this year at Rockhaven. We hadn't even had a frost yet, the leaves were still on the trees, and flowers were still blooming! It all looked so beautiful before the power went out. But, we withstood it all. The Admin House kept the fireplace burning, and residents were taking advantage of the gas top stove in the Admin kitchen to keep their hot drink cups filled with steaming hot water, and to cook their frozen goods as they gradually thawed over the days without power.
